Carl P returns

From The Tennessean....Carl P. Mayfield & The P-Team will begin airing at 3-7 p.m. today on Road Dog Trucking on Sirius satellite radio channel 147.

Charlie Daniels will be the first guest on the debut broadcast. Carl P.'s affiliation with Sirius was announced last month, but the show is just now beginning because it took time to get the studio up and running, according to folks at Sirius in New York.

"Sirius has built a state of the art studio from the ground up and I watched it come together with a great deal of pride and a feeling that I've finally found the right group of radio professionals," the P-man says.

I predict this will boost Sirius's subscriber base considering Carl P's popularity.

Now that was funny. You need your own morning drive show here in Nashville.

Does anybody outside of Nashville know who he is?

Carl P was one of the most popular country music DJs in the country. It makes sense for Sirius to capitalize on his fame.

There is a rumor Carl P. is being considered as a replacement for Steve Gill. I predict he would boost the ratings.

WTN's going with a "morning news" show. Carl P. Will not be the host.

Where will Gill land?

what's wrong with carl p on wwtn? he had a very popular talk show on the Zone.

1. Carl P's Zone show was never popular. Way too many fans of Plaster's more family-friendly show called the station to complain. Way too many Zone listeners were wanting sports in the morning.

2. If 99.7 wants to raise their AM ratings with an all-news show, they'll have to hire a known TV news personality in the market to draw attention. Just getting a newsreader won't work. Hiring a retired network guy won't work (remember Fred Graham?) No, I think 99.7 knows exactly what it wants to do, or they wouldn't have let Gill's contract totally lapse.

...and what you'll have is intelligent people like you and me, who can appreciate the hard work that goes into news gathering and reporting, as the ones who are tuning in. Unfortunately, without some "name" to draw some attention to the program, there won't be many more than you or I listening.

As you may have seen in other markets for this type of news show, the TV anchor or a similar "name person" gets top billing as a co-host and reads what's written for him/her. The "name" doesn't write or produce, the "name" is just there to draw attention. Of course, those of us who have been on such staffs always resent the "name" for getting the glory while we do all of the work. My point in bringing this up is that this always seems to happen when an FM talker tries this, as opposed to when an AM talker does this, so it's a little unfair to cite examples of how it has worked without a "name" on AM stations. I know how well WLAC and WSB-AM and a few other AMs have done. It seems like the FMs always want a "personality", however. Maybe WWTN will do things differently.
